Deaths: deprivation

Chart 1 shows the strong relationship in Scotland between all-cause mortality and area-level deprivation (as measured by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD 2020)). The death rate is highest in areas of high deprivation. In 2022, the age-sex standardised mortality rate for the most deprived fifth of the population (quintile) was almost twice that of the least deprived quintile (1,600 compared to 865 deaths per 100,000 people respectively).

This chart is restricted to residents of Scotland whose death is assigned to their area of residence. It excludes deaths of non-residents dying in Scotland (less than 1% of the total deaths registered).
