Asthma epidemiology

The European Respiratory Society produced the European Lung White book (2003) which provides comparisons of asthma prevalence and mortality amongst European countries.

The European Community Respiratory Health Survey. ECRHS II was a prospective survey of around 10,000 adults which collected data using standardised questionnaires from 29 centres in 14 mostly European countries.

The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) study has published a number of reports (see key references) on asthma in children.

The Global Asthma Network follows on the work of ISAAC, publishing reports on asthma in both adults and children.

The Global Initiative for Asthma provides reports and statistics on asthma worldwide

The Asthma UK Scotland website provides information on asthma for patients and health professionals.

The World Health Organisation asthma pages provide information about asthma and links to international resources.

The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (formerly LTCAS) is an alliance of voluntary and community organisations working with long term conditions.

The British Thoracic Society website includes pages on guidelines, clinical resources, and quality standards for asthma.

The American Thoracic Society asthma web pages include information for patients and professionals.

The UK based Primary Care Respiratory Society (formerly the GPIAG) has useful resources for primary care professionals including opinion sheets and primary care focussed summaries of guidelines.

The International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG) has a range of resources for primary care professionals.

The British Lung Foundation website includes general information on asthma for patients and professionals. More information on their activities in Scotland is available from their Scotland and Wales page.
