Deaths: councils

Chart 1 shows that at council level, there is considerable variation in all-cause mortality rates across Scotland. In 2022, the areas with the highest rates were West Dunbartonshire (1,407 deaths per 100,000 people) and Glasgow City (1,394 deaths per 100,000 people), whilst East Renfrewshire had the lowest rate (854 per 100,000 people).

Deaths are allocated to area of residence. For non-residents dying in Scotland, deaths are allocated to place of death. Non-residents account for less than 1% of deaths in Scotland.
