Injuries: UK and international

There are a number of sources of data available on comparative injury figures for Scotland, the United Kingdom and Europe.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published statistics which compare the UK with other European countries. Standardised rates of fatal injury across the EU-15 and UK showed a downward trend over the period 1994-2017, with a levelling off in more recent years. The UK consistently had one of the lowest rates of fatal injury across the EU.

The European Health for All (HfA) Database explorer provides comparative mortality trend data for UK and countries in Europe for a number of injury-related indicators. Note that data for Scotland is included within UK figures and cannot be further broken down.

The European Injury Database (IDB) contains information on injuries treated in hospital emergency departments across the EU. The most recent summary of the injury statistics and surveys drawing on this database, Injuries in the European Union 2009-2018, was published in 2021. Eurostat summarizes the statistics about injuries and accidents in the EU that they publish.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
