Social environment: rating of neighbourhood
Overall in Scotland, people appear to rate their neighbourhood positively as a place to live, with the most recent Scottish Household Survey figures suggesting that in 2018 around 95% of Scottish residents rated their neighbourhood as a 'very good' or 'fairly good' place to live. As shown below in Chart 1, the figures vary only slightly across different council areas of the country.
At the national level, there has been very little change in these figures in recent years, with the figure fluctuating between 92% and 95% over the last 10 years or so.
Greater variation in the perception of neighbourhoods is evident when analysing survey responses by levels of area deprivation. Chart 2 does this using the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation and shows that the percentages of people rating their neighbourhood positively in 2019 ranged from 80% in the most deprived Scottish neighbourhoods to 100% of respondents in the least deprived.
