Scottish population demographics

 

The chart below shows the estimated number of people in Scotland aged 60 years and over by single year of age and gender for mid-2023.

Men have a lower life expectancy at birth than women (76.8 years for men compared to 80.8 for women, (Life Expectancy in Scotland, 2021-23, National Records of Scotland) (1553KB). From the 1980s until the early 2010s life expectancy at birth increased in Scotland, it then stalled for several years, decreased in 2018-2020, and increased in 2021-2023 (Life Expectancy in Scotland, 2021-23, National Records of Scotland) (1553KB).

Healthy life expectancy has been decreasing for males since 2015-17 and for females since 2014-16. In 2019-2021 healthy life expectancy was 61.1 years for females, and 60.4 years for males, and these figures are both lower than in 2009-2011 (Healthy Life Expectancy 2019-2021, National Records for Scotland (602KB)).
