Mental health: deprivation

Major risk factors for mental health problems include poverty, poor education, unemployment, social isolation/exclusion and major life events.

The Scottish Burden of Disease Study report on deprivation (638kB) found that the rate of burden due to mental and substance use disorders was 4.4 times higher in the most deprived compared to the least deprived areas in Scotland.

For more information on deprivation and health, see the ScotPHO pages on deprivation.
