Scottish Primary Care Information Resource

The Scottish Primary Care Information Resource (SPIRE) was a new national GP information system launched in 2018 that superseded the data collected for Practice Team Information. SPIRE aimed to include richer data from a greater number of practices, however, the data collection was decommissioned in 2023. It is being replaced by a new primary care data extraction tool which is being developed in partnership with Public Health Scotland, National Services Scotland, and the Scottish Government.

In 2023 SPIRE estimated that 25,906 primary care consultations for females relating to epilepsy occurred, compared to 29,577 consultations for males. More detailed statistics on primary care consultations on epilepsy including breakdowns by age and geographical area are available in the SPIRE General Practice Disease Prevalence dashboard. Please note that SPIRE was an aggregate collection representing only 69% of General Practices in Scotland; therefore, these figures may not be representative of the entire population.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
