Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): NHS board data

Chart 1 shows the estimated prevalence of COPD per 100 practice patients in 2015/16 by NHS Board based on Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) figures for Scotland prior to the discontinuation of the framework in Scotland in 2016. The horizontal red line shows the prevalence for Scotland as a whole. Note that the data are not age-standardised (as age and sex are not available) and that some of the variation in prevalence may therefore be explained by differences in average population age between boards (as well as differences in smoking rates).

Chart 2 shows the rates of hospital discharge in 2020/21 with COPD as the main diagnosis, by NHS board. The rates are not standardised for age or sex. Smoking patterns are likely to explain much of this variation, though other factors such as air pollution and clinical practice variations related to admission may also contribute.

Data on hospital admissions for COPD by Local Authority are available in the Acute Hospital Activity annual publication on the PHS website together with information on bed-days. More information on COPD incidence, hospitalisations and deaths for a number of different geographies can be found in the ScotPHO profiles tool.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
