Asthma: survey and burden of disease data

Scottish Health Survey

The Scottish Health Survey is carried out annually to provide information about the health of the Scottish population, and includes questions on doctor diagnosed asthma and self-reported wheeze. Prior to 2012 it also included a nurse visit at which time lung function data could be collected. An overview of the Scottish Health Survey is available in the ScotPHO resources section, and detailed results are available from the Scottish Health Survey publications web page.

Scottish Burden of Disease Study

The Scottish Burden of Disease Study estimates the overall health burden of Asthma in Scotland, with both non-fatal and fatal health loss combined into the Disability-Adjusted Life Year. An interactive tool is available for data at NHS Board and Local Authority level, with a national tool to follow in due course. A briefing paper published for asthma is 2016 is available in the study’s archive, although note that it used a different methodology from the interactive tool.

Please note: If you require the most up-to-date data available, please check the data sources directly as new data may have been published since these data pages were last updated. Although we endeavour to ensure that the data pages are kept up-to-date, there may be a time lag between new data being published and the relevant ScotPHO web pages being updated.
