Allergic conditions: secondary care data

Since most people with allergic conditions are managed in primary care, secondary care (hospital) data relate to a smaller group of people, generally with more severe conditions.

Chart 1 shows data from the Scottish Morbidity Record (SMR01) scheme, which records hospital inpatient and day case activity for Scotland. The tables show the numbers and rates of hospital admissions for selected allergic conditions and for asthma, together with the corresponding rates, for the financial years 2008/09 to 2022/23.

The chart shows hospital admissions per 100,000 population have remained relatively stable for all allergies until the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2019/20 and 2020/21, admission rate fell by 43.9% to 94 per 100,000. Although rates have begun to increase in subsequent years, with an annual increase of 6.3% to 120 per 100,000 reported in 2022/23, this rate remains 28.1% lower than prior to the pandemic in 2019/20.
