Scottish population demographics

Population pyramids  from National Records of Scotland show, for each sex, how the age distribution of the population is projected to change up to 2041. The proportion of the population aged 65 years and over is projected to increase, with marked growth in the 90 years and over age group. The chart shows the estimated number of people in Scotland aged 60 years and over by single year of age and gender for 2020.

Men have a lower life expectancy than women (77 years for men compared to 81 for women, 2017-19). However, the percentage of life expected to be spent in “healthy” health has remained stable for men (80% for men, 2017-19) but has reduced for women (76%, 2017-19). (see our Healthy life expectancy: Scotland page).
