Population: household projections

Scotland

As with the Scottish population, the number of households is projected to increase between 2018 and 2043, from 2.48 to 2.71 million between 2018 and 2043, a rise of 9%.
The average number of persons per household continues to reduce overall. Chart 1 shows the predicted growth between 2018 and 2043 in the percentage of households comprising one adult or one adult with children, and the predicted reduction in the percentage of households comprising two or more adults (with or without children).

By council

Chart 2 shows that across the 32 councils, a rise in number of households is projected between 2018 and 2043 for a majority of councils (24). The biggest falls in number of households are projected in Na h-Eileanan Siar (-11%), Inverclyde (-10%) and Argyll & Bute (-8%). In contrast in over a third of the councils the number of households is projected to rise by more than 10% with the highest rise projected for Midlothian (38%).
